LINCOLN IMPS XV 40

BY JOSEPH VERNEY

Jack Miles crossed for a brace of tries as Lincoln’s Imps XV recorded a 40-22 away victory in a hard-fought battle against Worksop.

Captain George Pomfret, Darren Rorie, Will Hewing, and Jack Randell also scored tries for Lincoln, with the latter successfully kicking five conversions.

Ollie Keen, Zach Skayman, and Harry Whittaker all impressed on their senior debuts for Lincoln. Whittaker was also named as Lincoln’s man-of-the-match.

Lincoln opened the scoring after just three minutes when Miles took a hard line off the ruck from Luke Brodrick, before bumping a few Worksop players off to score a try. Randell added the extras.

Worksop hit back to take the lead with two unconverted tries before the score swung back in Lincoln’s favour after 23 minutes.

A fantastic pass by Brodrick set up Rorie who burst through two tackles to power over the line for a try. Randell once again successfully slotted over the conversion.

Worksop regained the lead with a converted try shortly before the half hour mark, but it was Lincoln who ended the first half on top with a 21-17 lead going in at the break.

Hewing turned the ball over on the 10 metre line, which he popped up to a team-mate before Lincoln ran down the right-hand side of the pitch. The winger then received a pop pass from captain Pomfret before going over for a try from five metres out, which Randell converted.

Worksop crossed for a converted try after 56 minutes to edge back in front by a single point, but their lead didn’t last long.

Just two minutes later a pick and go, and an assist by James Willows-Chamberlin, set up Miles to burrow his way under a few players for his second try of the match. Randell added the extras.

Scorer then turned provider as Lincoln increased their lead with another try after 63 minutes. Miles ran a good line and powered through a few tackles, before offloading to captain Pomfret who went through three players to score a great try, which Randell converted.

Lincoln completed a great afternoon with their sixth try four minutes from time. After a miss pass from Miles outside the 22, Randell stepped the first defender and handed off another to leave him with a run into the corner for a try.

After the match coach Adam Kelleher said: “It was a slow start in the first half that developed into a good controlled game of rugby, with great support play and passing creating multiple chances.

“Special mentions to Ollie Keen, Zach Skayman and Harry Whittaker on their senior debuts, with a man-of-the-match performance from Harry.”

Captain George Pomfret said: “The lads did themselves proud in the second half. They found a way to win and there were several lads that put in very strong performances for the team.”

Try hero Jack Miles added: “We didn’t play to our full potential in the first half and allowed easy yards.

“However, in the second half all the lads dug in and put in a big shift, and eventually it was the fitness and effectiveness of all the boys playing that won us the game.”
