Lincoln Colts battled hard on Friday night but, despite some positive play, they were unable to prevent a 22-3 defeat against Stamford.

Lincoln opened the scoring after seven minutes when Stamford were penalised for holding on in a tackle on the edge of the 22, and Kyran Makinson successfully slotted over the penalty.

Back came Stamford, who were awarded a penalty near the 22 and kicked for the corner. Although Lincoln stopped the initial drive, Stamford put together another three phases before Fin Gray eventually crashed over on the 15 metre channel to the right-hand side of the posts.

Lincoln were then reduced to 14 players after being shown a yellow card for repeated team penalties. After some to and fro play between both sides, Stamford produced 10-15 phases of play and the pressure told as Sam Easton went over for a try. Will Murphy added the extras.

Unfortunately for Lincoln they messed up the kick-off and Stamford were awarded a scrum in the middle of the park.

Lincoln’s defence initially kept out repeated phases from Stamford, but the visitors eventually managed to work the ball into the 22 before Louis Nelson went over for a try in the corner.

The conversion was missed as Lincoln trailed 17-3 at the break.

There wasn’t much to separate the teams for the majority of the second half until Stamford made sure of the victory with a move down the right-hand side of the pitch, which set up a try for Will Gray.
