Lincoln Colts battled hard in their NLD Cup clash and their set piece was solid throughout the match, but ultimately West Bridgford were too strong for them on the day in a 37-5 defeat.
West Bridgford opened the scoring with a penalty before following that up with their first try of the game soon after.
After a good passage of play to keep the ball alive in the tackle, West Bridgford moved it from right to left. Lincoln tackled man on man, but the hosts ended up with one man extra who went over for an unconverted try.
Lincoln saw a player sent to the sin bin for a high tackle and West Bridgford soon took advantage of having an extra player by scoring an unconverted try.
West Bridgford then lost a player to the sin bin with a yellow card, but that didn’t stop the hosts from taking a 13-0 lead in at the break.
Lincoln continued to battle hard in the second half, but West Bridgford scored three decisive tries, and a penalty to give themselves a 37-point lead.
Lincoln refused to give up and were eventually rewarded with a try in the final minutes of the match that their play thoroughly deserved.
A hard carry from Zane Redfern led to Lincoln being awarded a penalty. Advantage was given by the referee and Lincoln played the ball through the hands and Max Cartwright went over for a try.
The result means that Lincoln Colts now drop into the NLD Shield.
POST MATCH COMMENT
After the match Lincoln’s Director of Age Grade Rugby Chris Briggs said: “The lads did well and it was good to see what we had been practising in the. Week materialise on the pitch.
“The set piece was solid with Lincoln dominant in the scrum and the maul on the lineout gave us a good go forward, but West Bridgford were just too strong for us to consistently break their line.
“Their ball movement and support play were their major assets and on the day West Bridgford were deserved winners and we wish them well in the next round.”
