Jenna Bierton and Deirdre Waters crossed for an impressive combined total of 11 tries as Lincoln Ladies confidently beat Ossett 89-0.

Rose Buchanan grabbed two tries and Kellie Pyart and Jodie Hill each scored one in a match, which also saw Lincoln lend seven players to the opposition.

Lincoln started strongly with Bierton scoring her first two tries inside the opening 10 minutes of the match.

Jo Parkes made good ground over the halfway line on her home debut for Lincoln. The ball was then recycled quickly at the breakdown through the hands for Bierton to run 35 metres for a try under the posts. Bierton successfully slotted over the conversion.

From a scrum, Jade Morgan drew in a defender before popping the ball to Bierton, who ran in for a try from halfway which she also converted.

From the restart Lucy Ellis, who was named as coach Brian Kelly’s player of the match, carried the ball into the opposition 22. Good phase work then got the ball out to Pyart, who ran in for a try from 20 metres out.

Lincoln were soon in again as Hill ran for the line from 15 metes out and stretched out for a try, with several players on top of her to try and prevent her scoring.

Lincoln continued to pile pressure on the Ossett, with Ellis running through the defence before being tackled just two metres from the try line. Lincoln then conceded a penalty, but soon won the ball back and Rose Buchanan powered over for a try from 15 metres out, which she also converted.

Waters scored her first try of the match after receiving the ball from Midge Newsome and running 40 metres to score under the posts.  Bierton added the extras.

Good work from the kick-off saw Lincoln take the ball over the 10 metre line and out wide through all the backs to Waters, who ran 35 metres to score. Liv Smith slotted over the conversion to give Lincoln a 45-0 lead going in at the break.

Lincoln started the second half in the same confident manner and soon increased their lead. A wide ball at the ruck by Morgan set up Bierton, who ran down the left to complete her hat-trick with a try under the posts.

Bierton was soon in again as she outpaced the defence for a great try, which she also converted.

From the kick-off Lincoln went down the left with some good recycling work at the rucks. The ball then came wide right for Waters to go over for a try in the corner to complete her hat-trick.

Waters, who was named as Lincoln’s back of the match, caught the ball from the kick-off and ran through the Ossett defence to score her fourth try of the match.

After stealing the ball from an Ossett lineout, the ball then went left to Bierton, who ran in for her fifth try as Lincoln’s attack showed no signs of slowing down.

Buchanan then beat the cover defence to score a try under the posts after good pressure at a ruck and some impressive phases by Lincoln.

There was still time for Lincoln to score a further two tries. After forcing a penalty Ossett lost the ball in contact and Lincoln’s forwards carried through four phases.

The ball eventually came out to Bierton, who ran the ball in from 50 metres to complete her second hat-trick of the afternoon before also adding the conversion.

Directly from the kick-off Lincoln carried the ball right before Waters broke two tackles to go in for her fifth try of the match.

It was an excellent afternoon for Lincoln, who gave debuts to Lara Warman and Clara Temple, with the latter being borrowed by Ossett for the full match. Hollie Bullock also made an impressive comeback to rugby for Lincoln.

POST MATCH COMMENT

Lincoln Ladies head coach Brian Kelly said: “The game was played in a brilliant spirit. A special thanks to the Gainsborough girls without whom this fixture wouldn’t have been possible.

“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves including the ref. Games like this are why we love rugby so much, despite the one sided score line.

“Also well done to Lucy Ellis who hadn’t played rugby before this season and the Ossett scrum-half who was playing in her first ever game.”
