The newly formed Ladies 2nd XV at Lincoln joined forces with Gainsborough to play in their second ever Allianz Inner Warrior fixture day at Newark on Sunday.
The four Lincoln players - debutants Alice Ward and Faye Barnes, along with Emma O’Rourke and Lucy Weekes - are all new to rugby and slotted into the game without hesitation.
It was the team’s first full length game and it was split into four quarters.
Lincoln and Gainsborough’s defence held well in the first two quarters with Newark only managing to score one try.
Lincoln and Gainsborough’s team slotted over a penalty after a good spell of pressure.
However, fitness proved to be the difference in the final two quarters as Newark scored further tries to run out 38-3 winners.
That didn’t stop the away team from making a last ditch effort to put Newark under a lot of pressure in the closing stages of the match. They pushed all the way to Newark’s five metre line before a player was tackled into touch.
All of the players in the squad plays their hearts out and left everything on the pitch.
After the match Lincoln Ladies 2nd XV coach Hev Lamming said: “The four Lincoln Ladies, who are all new to rugby, did extremely well, and slotted into the game without hesitation, despite two of them making their debuts.
“I can’t fault the effort and determination that they showed. Everyone played their socks off!
“This is our second Inner Warrior playing with Gainsborough. Both the ladies and coaches have been very welcoming and have supported our players brilliant.
“Unfortunately for our combined team on Sunday, the scoreline wasn’t on our side and I don’t feel it is an accurate reflection of the effort, determination and grit that all the Ladies displayed.
“We look forward to training and playing with Gainsborough again for our next fixture.”
Market Rasen played against Southwell in the other match on this Inner Warrior fixture.
