Lincolnshire Lancers showed great character and determination when they recently competed in the Vulcan Cup - an off-season friendly tournament hosted by Sheffield Vulcans at Stockbridge Rugby Club.
Captain Orion Fergie led the Lancers, supported by vice captain Will Ryland, in the tournament which included teams such as Hull Roundheads and Northampton Outlaws. Fixtures were drawn at random and the day concluded with semi-finals and a final.
The Lancers started the tournament with a 6-2 defeat against Vulcan Hammers before bouncing back in style with an impressive 5-2 victory against Coventry Corsairs.
The Lancers backed that up with another victory - a 3-1 win against Birmingham Longhorns - before suffering a 5-1 defeat against Vulcan Forges.
The results meant that the Lancers finished fifth overall and only narrowly missed out on a semi-final sport due to points difference. The tournament was won by Vulcan Forges.
Shaun Husband was named as the Lancers’ Player of the Day after returning after several months out through injury.
He played on the wing and worked tirelessly throughout the day, scoring two tries and communicating brilliantly whilst proving himself as a safe pair of hands.
Joe Haggo and Will Ryland were described as “unstoppable” and each racked up multiple tries with a show of great skill and determination.
Jamie Walmsley, playing on the wing, set up a try for captain Orion Fergie against Vulcan Forges with a perfectly-timed late pop.
At the end of each match, the captain votes for an MVP from the opposing team - a great way to celebrate sportsmanship and skill across the board. For the Lancers, Ryland came out on to overall.
He seamlessly switched between mid and link roles and was described as “an outstanding vice captain” offering advice on and off the pitch, as well as bringing enthusiasm and demonstrating exceptional skills.
Despite the rain and mud, the Lancers’ spirit never wavered. Every player gave 100% and supported one another, showcasing the very best of what the team stands for.
The Lancers believe the scores showed that Sheffield were incredibly strong opponents and will be tough opponents when the league resumes, and they are excited to see how they and other teams develop in the coming months.
The Lancers will return to action in their next fixture - the Hadrian’s Cup tournament in Newcastle on March 7, 2026.
