Lincoln Colts played with good tempo against their county rivals, but lost 38-25 against a Scunthorpe side who were ultimately the more clinical side on the day.

Finn Clements, Euan Lowe, Ollie Lennon and Max Cartwright all scored tries for Lincoln, while James Tomlinson kicked one conversion and a penalty.

Alfie Murray grabbed a brace of tries for Scunthorpe and Jake Pullan and Reece Clark each scored one, with the latter also adding three conversions. Scunthorpe were also awarded a penalty try, while Jack Murray kicked one conversion and a penalty.

Lincoln opened the scoring after kicking a penalty into touch just inside Scunthorpe’s 22. After a back peel move off the lineout, Charlie Bargh made a good carry before offloading to Clements, who ran a hard line to score a try just to the right-hand side of the posts.

Scunthorpe reduced the deficit with a penalty before adding a try when Lincoln were down to 14 players because of a head injury.

Tomlinson slotted over a penalty as Lincoln cut the gap in the score to just two points before the hosts took the lead soon after.

Scunthorpe tried to kick the ball after a scrum and it went loose. Lincoln regathered and Lowe ran in for a try to the left-hand side of the posts.

Tomlinson slotted over the conversion as Lincoln took a narrow 15-10 lead going in at the break.

Despite valiant defending by Lincoln they couldn’t stop Scunthorpe from running in four tries, including a penalty try and a good break from halfway.

Lincoln refused to give up and, after Lennon took a crash ball from a penalty just outside the 22, he ran through the defence to score a great try. Tomlinson’s conversion attempt hit the post.

Although there wasn’t long enough left to change the outcome of the match, Lincoln did have the final say with the last try of the match.

Bargh ran down the right-hand touchline before offloading out the back to Cartwright who went over for a try near the corner flag.

POST MATCH COMMENTS

After the match Lincoln’s Director of Age Grade Rugby Chris Briggs said: “Last week we played poorly and won. This week we played a lot better and lost.

“Our tempo and connection were much better this week, but so were the opposition.

“A couple of loose tackles in midfield cost us points and ultimately the game.

“However, the lads should take a lot of encouragement from how they played.

“Onwards and upwards and we look forward to hosting Southwell next week (December 6).”
