Lincoln Imps XV showed great determination and character, but the result wasn’t to be as they bowed out of the NLD 2nd XV Cup with a 50-19 defeat away against Maltby.

Mitch Ashworth, Jack Miles and Bowen Jones all scored tries for Lincoln, who also had two disallowed, while Luke Brodrick successfully kicked two conversions.

Lincoln started strongly and opened the scoring inside the opening minute of the match as Ashworth took a quick tap and ran in for a try from five metres out. Brodrick added the extras.

The visitors were reduced to to 14 men soon after when Flynn Smith was given a yellow card for allegedly being offside when he made a hit.

Maltby missed the subsequent penalty, but went on to score three converted tries to take a 21-7 lead in at the break.

The hosts extended their lead with an unconverted try after 48 minutes before losing two players to the sin bin.

Lincoln took advantage by scoring shortly before the hour mark as Jones finished off a great team try from a maul. Brodrick once again slotted over the conversion.

Maltby then scored again before Lincoln reduced the deficit with their third try of the afternoon after Jack Miles ran a hard line to score.

Lincoln battled hard and didn’t give up throughout the match but, unfortunately for the visitors, Maltby added a further three tries to ensure their passage through to the cup semi-final.

POST MATCH COMMENT

After the match Lincoln Imps XV captain Dave Rose-Allen said: “It was a difficult game against a team who are new and unknown.

“We put out a mixed team due to availability issues. I’m proud of the lads who stepped up and how we fought to the end.

“However, Maltby were the better team on the day and we wish them luck for the rest of the cup.”
